Building Code Analysis

Anticipating and correcting code violations for safety, efficiency & accuracy

Burnham’s code consultants have the comprehensive knowledge and expertise that extends beyond the building code itself. This allows us to anticipate corrections based on your specific municipality’s code requirements and provide practical solutions based on code interpretations and recent precedents.

Building Code Analysis can consist of any or all of the following services:

Building Code Analysis

  • Identifying the applicable codes, regulations and standards based on project location
  • Establishing occupancy, construction type, height/area limits, property-line distances, egress and interior environment requirements
  • Providing interpretations and applying for variances and exceptions to prescriptive provisions in the code
    • Preparing required reports and communication
    • Conducting follow-up with AHJ meetings and variance requests

Fire and Life Safety Code Analysis

  • Reviewing NFPA and Fire Codes including:
    • Fire Alarm Systems and Automatic Fire
    • Alternative Protection Systems
    • Atrium Smoke Control Systems
    • Spray Booths and Spray Finishing Operations
    • Flammable and Combustible Liquids
    • Hazardous Materials
    • Emergency Systems

M/E/P Code Analysis

  • Verifying basic ventilation systems
  • Checking natural light and natural ventilation
  • Reviewing basic electrical systems
  • Reviewing of requirements under NEC
  • Reviewing basic plumbing systems
  • Reviewing and/or preparing plumbing fixture counts

Accessibility Code Analysis - Commercial and Residential

  • Reviewing commercial code compliance using (whichever is most stringent):
    • ICC/ANSI A117.1
    • IBC
    • State Code
  • Reviewing Residential code compliance using (whichever is most stringent):
    • FHAA Guidelines
    • ICC/ANSI A117.1

Energy Code Analysis - Commercial and Residential

  • Reviewing of Residential Energy Efficiency using prescriptive or performance criteria
    • REScheck
  • Reviewing of Commercial Energy Efficiency using prescriptive or performance criteria
    • ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1
    • COMcheck
